YES WE CAN!!! YES WE DID!!!

I floated on cloud nine all day long. My jubilance left me euphorically tongue tied throughout the day. I can say now with complete honesty and without reservation-I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. And no, it’s not because an African American is the president elect. It is because America demonstrated to me last night that skin color is immaterial concerning the best candidate for our Commander in Chief. And the best candidate for the job in this moment in history happens to be brown like me! We proved that race doesn’t really matter as we are human with the same needs and concerns.

This election has eradicated much of my hard boiled cynicism concerning this country and my color. It has been proven beyond any measure of doubt this truly is the land of opportunity. Since the 8th grade, I’ve respectfully declined from standing for the Pledge of Allegiance because I never felt those words were applicable to me personally (‘…one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all’ felt false) and my conscience wouldn’t allow me to stand for something I didn’t believe in. I now have hope. I now have something tangible in which to believe. I can now stand and I can’t tell you how good it feels.

And let this be dire warning to my delusional brown brethren who blame pinky for their personal condition. No longer can you use “the man” as your scapegoat. You’ll actually have to hold yourself accountable for your own failure to succeed. Wow…what a concept! Allow this occurrence to set the tone for your potential and possibilities.

For my mother to be able to share this momentous event with 3 generations is completely indescribable. This is an experience we never dreamt we’d be blessed enough to share with one another. My kids are excited about 2012. They have seen the impact of voting and can’t wait for their chance in four years. They see the difference they can make.
